Alan Price is an English musician who first found prominence as the original keyboardist of the English rock band the Animals. He left the band in 1965 to form the Alan Price Set; his hit singles with and without the group include "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear", "The House That Jack Built", "Rosetta" and "Jarrow Song". 

Price is also known for work in film and television, taking occasional acting roles and composing the soundtrack of Lindsay Anderson's film O Lucky Man! He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Animals.

Alex Kapranos is one of the most recognised faces in the music industry. He spent his first several years of his life growing up in Sunderland before his family moved North of the border. Alex is best known as the frontman and guitarist with the band Franz Ferdinand, a seminal art indie group formed in Glasgow. The group won the Mercury Music Prize in 2004 and have also achieved Brit Awards.

Alex is also a recognised producer having made records with acts like The Cribs, Little Boots, Citizens!, RM Hubbard and Los Bitchos. Alex has collaborated with Sparks, Edwyn Collins and Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai.

Amateur Ornithologist are a weird pop ensemble from North East England. Starting as a solo project, AO has grown to perform as anything from a five-piece to an octet. 

With a predominantly neurodivergent line-up, Amateur Ornithologist fuses pop, orchestral, jazz and post-punk influences to create a grand melodic sound. AO have earned comparisons to Talking Heads, The Beach Boys and local heroes Field Music due to their adventurous approach to densely-layered, harmony-filled pop. They’ve released three albums, been on the cover of NARC Magazine and played a host of sold-out shows.

Barry Hyde is the lead singer and guitarist for Sunderland icons The Futureheads.

Formed in 2000, Barry and his fellow Futureheads have released six albums, and Barry released his debut solo album, Malody, in 2016. 

Alongside his work as a musician Barry is the co-founder of Northern Academy Of Music Education (NAME) at The Fire Station alongside Dan Donnelly.

Barry "Baz" Warne is the guitarist and vocalist of The Stranglers.

Earlier in his career, he was the guitarist and frontman of numerous bands. His first recordings to be released were with the Sunderland punk band Toy Dolls, whom he joined as bassist in 1983. He toured extensively with them and recorded two singles before forming the Troubleshooters in 1985.

Dave Stewart is a musician, songwriter and record producer, best known for Eurythmics, his successful professional partnership with Annie Lennox.

Sometimes credited as David A. Stewart, he won Best British Producer at the 1986, 1987 and 1990 Brit Awards. 

Stewart (along with Lennox) was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020 and the duo were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Emeli Sandé, is a Scottish singer and songwriter, born in Sunderland. Sandé rose to prominence after being a featured artist on the 2009 track "Diamond Rings" by rapper Chipmunk. Eve Gallagher is a singer and musician from Sunderland. Besides her native English she speaks German, French and Italian, writes children’s books and sings grand opera on her days off. Eve has studied drama, English literature and has appeared in several musicals in the UK.

She made a lasting impression in the USA following a 22-state highly acclaimed tour there with her band. The song ‘Lovin’ You Again’, performed and co-written with Uli Heinzler is featured in the British movie ‘The Art Of Love’, released in 2022. Eve‘s new album "Roots" was written and produced by Uli Heinzler & Eve Gallagher. The album is a journey full of freedom, love and hope and features some of the most accomplished musicians around today (Patrick Murdoch, guitar (Simply Red), Roman Roth, drums (Simply Red), Ondrej Pivec, Keyboards and Organ (Gregory Porter), Uli Heinzler, bass and Eve (vocals). Sunderland blues legend and his band bringing a new interpretation to the blues.

‘The George Shovlin Band’, and then ‘George Shovlin and The Radars’, have had, and still do have, one musical direction...white Europeans playing blues in the 21st century.

Everything they play is rooted in black American music that emerged in the early 20th century and has continued to evolve up to the present day.

Much of their earlier music was radical rearrangement of familiar...and sometimes less familiar, blues.

 Songs like Muddy Water’s ‘Long Distance Call’, Furry Lewis’ ‘Pearline Blues’ and Brownie McGee’s ‘Sportin Life’ have undergone radical re-working. But at the same time the band has begun to explore how to present their own material, without losing their blues base.

George Lamb started playing the guitar at the early age of ten years old and began writing songs while still at secondary school, where he performed at school concerts.

In his teens he performed live with other North East musicians and quickly made a name for himself as a talented young guitar player and vocalist. By the time he was twenty, he was playing regularly across the North East with the band he co-founded, the hugely popular Southbound.

Southbound played original material, which was all written or co-written by George and throughout the 1970’s, they ‘packed them in’, wherever and whenever they performed. Although they won the prestigious Battle of the Bands and Melody Maker Competitions the band never made the ‘big time’ but played to critical acclaim, throughout the UK.

After Southbound, George teamed up with another experienced songwriter, Phil Caffrey and secured a music publishing deal with Axis Music Ltd, a subsidiary company of Carlin Music Corporation. They wrote many songs together which were performed by established and aspiring artists. Their biggest success was when Kiki Dee recorded and released one of their songs, which was produced by Chris Kimsey, who famously produced albums for The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, Peter Frampton, INXS …and many more.

Over the ensuing years, George worked as a session player and recorded with numerous diverse artists, that included the likes of Keith Emerson (ELP), Jimmy Nail and Saxon. He also played ‘live’ guitar for various bands, including one that supported the Eurythmics on their 1989 World Tour.

More recently, George has played guitar in the blues/rock band, ‘George Shovlin and The Radars’, playing venues and festivals across the UK and in Europe. Often the headlining band, they have also supported Steve Cropper, John Mayall and Walter Trout, to name just a few.

The band’s last album, “Nothing to Lose’ featured eleven songs, mainly written by George. When it was released in 2018, it went straight to number 1 in the IBBA Top 40 Chart (Independent Blues Broadcasters Association). Cerys Mathews has also played songs from the album on her Blues Show on BBC Radio 2.

Hyde is Dave Hyde (Futureheads drummer) and Beast is Neil Bassett (ex-Golden Virgins drummer). What do Hyde and Beast do? Hyde and Beast record an album. Hyde sing well. Album sound good. Beast happy.

How did Hyde and Beast? Neither of them is sure, but the two drummers recorded the album at Neil’s Sunderland-based recording studio at the rate of one song per day, and they managed to produce, record and mix it all by themselves.

David Brewis of Field Music and solo artist Lucas Renney provided some beautiful bass and guitar parts to two of songs on the album and for this Hyde and Beast are forever in their debt.

Isabel Maria’s quietly passionate and painfully articulate words have entranced thousands across the globe.

The Sunderland based singer-songwriter pens witty indie folk-pop ballads which capture the winding themes of mental health, human relationships, and social injustices. At just 17, Isabel is praised by press for her notoriously ‘open and mature songwriting’. Isabel began writing songs at age 11, later fuelling her emergence into the music world in 2021 with debut single Catharsis, heavily supported by Sunderland’s Young Musicians Project.

In its first months of release, the track won over local radio and press, as well as solidifying a spot as a UK Songwriting Contest finalist two years running. This success led to an explosive 2023 for the English songwriter, who was awarded a Northern Writers Award alongside support from We Make Culture, PRS, Generator and more via their coveted Next Steps programme. Venues such as The Glasshouse and The Fire Station have hosted Isabel alongside her ‘evocative’ and ‘ever-evolving’ live band.

Late 2023 brought a debut EP of six songs written on walks. Press describes the project as ‘hypnotic and expansive’ and this message was consolidated by a sellout release show in Sunderland.

Vocalist and songwriter Martin Brammer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Brewis met at school in Seaham. 

Teaming up with Paul Woods, the trio developed a liking for 60s/70s soul, funk and R&B which led them through several bands before forming The Kane Gang in late 1982. ‘Brother Brother’ was planned as their first single on Candle Records, a joint venture with friend Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout, but both bands were soon signed to new Newcastle label, Kitchenware.

In 1984, the company licensed ‘Brother Brother’ to London Records, which signed the band, releasing their attack at the north-south divide, ‘Smalltown Creed’ (1984), produced by Pete Wingfield. In contrast, ‘Closest Thing To Heaven’ was a smooth ballad, and secured the Kane Gang a UK Top 20 chart hit. Further success followed that same year with a faithful cover version of the Staple Singers’ ‘Respect Yourself’, a song which featured soul veteran P.P. Arnold on backing vocals. The Bad And Lowdown World Of The Kane Gang in early 1985 effectively summarized the band’s progress (and featured guest musicians included Sam Brown).

A two-year hiatus was broken by the release of the single ‘Motortown’, which brought another Top 40 hit and was followed by a second album. Sporting a slicker, more sophisticated production, Miracle also spawned ‘What Time Is It’, and then a cover version of Dennis Edwards’ ‘Don’t Look Any Further’ (1988), the latter reaching number 1 in the US dance chart. In 1991, vocalist Paul Woods departed to concentrate on a solo career. Brammer and Brewis attempted to record a new album before pulling the plug on the Kane Gang. Brammer went on to enjoy success as a songwriter, composing songs for the likes of Tina Turner, Beverley Knight, the Lighthouse Family, and James Morrison.

Michael Blackwell is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer.

He has spent the last few years working with artists such as Louis Tomlinson and Lewis Capaldi, and is now ready to embark on his own solo journey. Drawing from a range of influences Blackwell’s sound combines classic singer-songwriter, 90’s grunge, 00’s indie and modern alt-pop.

Learning guitar at a young age, Michael was inspired by his father's record collection, listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Police and The Beatles. As he grew, he became obsessed with a lot of bands and artists from the 90’s such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots cementing his love for guitar and classic songwriting.

Mick Grabham is an English rock guitarist born in Sunderland. He played lead guitar for Procol Harum after the departure of Dave Ball, beginning with their album, Grand Hotel through to Something Magic. He later played with Procol Harum at their 30 year reunion party at Redhill, Surrey in 1997, and at their Millennium Concert at Guildford, with the New London Symphonia, in 2000.

He also played a version of "The Wedding March" on the soundtrack of the movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, along with his Procol Harum bandmate, drummer B.J. Wilson. In the late 1960s, Grabham (then billed as Mick Graham) was a guitar playing member of Plastic Penny. They had a number six charting song in 1968 with “Everything I Am”.

Red London is an English punk band formed in Sunderland in December 1981, influenced by The Clash, Chelsea, SLF, The Angelic Upstarts, The Ruts and The Jam.

The band named themselves after a Sham 69 song. The band was formed by guitarist Kid Stoker, soon joined by brother Gaz Stoker on bass, as well as vocalist Patty Smith and drummer Raish Carter. In 1982 they signed to Razor Records, and their first release was 1983's Sten Guns in Sunderland EP, followed by the This is England LP in 1984, which received a 5/5 review in Sounds. 

The band began touring Europe from 1985. Having been replaced on drums for the band's debut album, Raish Carter returned on vocals replacing Patty Smith for third release, 1987 EP Pride and Passion, on French label Gougnaf Mouvement. Another French label, Negative, released second album Outlaws in 1989, by which time Marty Clark had taken over vocals. A series of releases followed in the 1990s for various labels both in the UK and abroad. The band reunited in 2018 and played their first gig back at the Museum Vaults in Sunderland.

Slug is the solo project of British musician Ian Black, a former touring bassist for angular indie rockers and a fixture of the Sunderland area indie scene since the early 2000s.

Mixing quirky, melodic guitar pop with art rock, '70s funk, and an array of other eclectic influences, Black recorded his debut in 2014 with help from brothers Peter and David Brewis, who co-produced the album.

Rounding out the ensemble are guitarist Rhys Patterson and bassist Andrew Lowther. Slug's debut LP, Ripe, was released in April 2015 by British indie. The follow-up, 2018's HiggledyPiggledy, departed from the debut in being a completely solo effort, with Black playing everything and producing as well.

Inspired by the Residents and the Holy Mountain soundtrack, Black took a minimalist -approach to recording that focused on drums and rhythm while lyrically detailing the Dadaistic nature of modern life.

Toy Dolls are an English punk rock band formed in 1979.

Departing from the angry lyrics and music often associated with punk rock, the Toy Dolls worked within the aesthetics of punk to express a sense of fun, with songs such as "Yul Brynner Was a Skinhead", "My Girlfriend's Dad's a Vicar" and "James Bond Lives Down Our Street".

There is often alliteration in their song titles (e.g., "Peter Practice's Practice Place", "Fisticuffs in Frederick Street", "Neville Is a Nerd", “Quick to Quit the Quentin”). They are probably best known however for their sole UK hit, a punk-rock cover of "Nellie the Elephant".

Their albums usually include a cover version of a well-known hit song, usually sped up to the usual punk rock tempo. Covers have included "Blue Suede Shoes", "Toccata in Dm", "No Particular Place to Go", "Sabre Dance", "Livin' La Vida Loca", "Lazy Sunday", "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", "She's So Modern" and "The Final Countdown". They have also recorded parodies of popular songs, such as "The Kids in Tyne and Wear (Kids in America)" and "The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe (The Devil Went Down to Georgia)". Their albums often start with a short intro with a catchy guitar riff, and end with an outro, which is usually a slightly longer variation of the intro riff. Kazoos are also prominent in many of their songs.

Most of the band members have nicknames, and are rarely seen without their cartoonish rectangular sunglasses (although they appeared bare-eyed on the One More Megabyte album cover).

Trevor Horn is a record producer and musician from Hetton-le-Hole. He is considered to be someone that defined the sound of music in the 1980’s such was his influence. A self taught musician in the 70’s he featured on tracks as a session player and producer. His first hit single was as a member of The Buggles with their track ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ in 1979.

For a period of time he was the singer in prog rock group Yes. Before turning his attention and talents to producing. Trevor has worked with such acts as Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC, Seal, LeAnn Rimes and Belle & Sebastian 

Trevor also co founded the record label ZTT Records and was the brains behind The Art of Noise

A five-piece rock band from the North East.

Formed over a love of dance music, Vandebilt are the ideas of Jordan Miller (songwriter/producer), Joe Collins (singer/songwriter), Jack Wade (drums/producer) and Dan Martin (guitar/songwriter).

Initially a recording project the group turned live with a free show at Newcastle’s prestigious venue The Cluny. At full capacity the show made such an impact the band began to work with DJ and producer Smoove on forming a full band sound from studio tracked demos.

After a year touring with Smoove & Turrell playing renowned venues across the UK (Band on the Wall Manchester, Jazz Cafe London, Brudenell Social Club Leeds) the band set about recording their debut album. Beginning with writing trips to France and recording sessions in Liverpool the band returned to their hometown studio ‘Motorhouse’ (Jordan Miller/Jack Wade) to track the album.

Following the two-year pandemic the band headed back to Liverpool to record and mix the album in entirety with Robert Whiteley (Whitewood Recording Studio). ‘The House That Vandebilt’ is a French house influenced pop record filled with earworms, hooks and synth sounds. Stand out tracks include ‘Dream in Colour’ and ‘Diana Ross’.

Vice Killer are a four-piece indie/alternative band based in Peterlee. The band consists of lead singer songwriter Thomas Low Gilling, lead guitarist James Langan, bassist Jack Langan and drummer Lewis Muir. 

The band started writing and recording music in late 2020, after the release of their 2021 debut EP ‘Alone, in This World’ which set the band on to play their first shows in South London, before sell out shows in the North East. The band then released their second release of 2021 'Heroine'.

The band returned in 2023 with single 'The Red Sky' after recording in Liverpool's Motor Museum with Al Groves. As well as their first single recorded with Blank Studios 'Where Can I Find Some Peace?', in 2024 Vice Killer released single 'Marlene's in Trouble' and 'The Dark Side of the Railway (Sunny)'.

Formed in 2017 after lead vocalist Sean became tired of playing covers, White Collar Rebel initially produced a sound that had an upbeat/dance vibe which took influence from ‘90s acid house and indie music.

Along their journey of maturity, the outfit has developed their sonic output to become a more riff-heavy band whilst also containing glimpses of the acid/dance vibe which they had initially become known for.

Boasting Coal Train’s / This Aint Vegas’s trademark strong melodies, sang in an ever-present and still-proud North-East accent, the Wicked Witch EP stomps along in a forceful and triumphant manner, led by Richard’s guitar and heart-on-sleeve vocals, Jordan’s drums, and Martin’s bass and harmonies. 

Brimming with post-punk urgency the music is sweet, yet you can’t help but feel there is a darker thought lurking behind every word.
