Independent record labels have existed for almost as long as popular music has been on the radio; from platforming black R&B artists in the 1950s, to discovering underground punk bands in the 70s and still going strong providing an alternative to the billionaire conglomerates to this day!
In this panel, hosted by Frankie Francis (Frankie & The Heartstrings) we will hear three different perspectives on what an indie label is, and does, how it can support the career of an artist and what some of the differences are between working with a smaller, independent team and the big money boardrooms of your Sony's and Warners.
Pat Fogarty, of Manchester based label, Heist or Hit, will share his unique perspective on the current state of indie record labels and how the industry has changed over recent years. With a roster spearheaded by the likes of Westside Cowboy, and alumni such as Her's, Heist or Hit are garnering a reputation for discovering and supporting some of the hottest emerging acts in indie music right now.
Grace Stubbings, keyboardist of up-and-coming riot grrl rockers, Venus Grrrls, and fresh from a 3-page spread in Kerrang! Magazine can discuss what it's like to be an artist working with an indie record label right now. What does a label actually do? Has being signed changed the complexion of the band? How were they discovered?
And finally, Rob Coles, of North East indie legends, Little Comets, is here to open up about his bands experiences with labels, both major and independent, across their 15+ year career in the music industry. We will also talk about why they ultimately made the decision to form their own label, The Smallest Label, and go fully DIY.
Live music will be provided by South Shields singer-songwriter and adopted Mackem, Patrick Gosling, fresh from the release of his debut EP.
There will also be time at the end for an audience Q&A, as well as some dedicated networking time, so come down and get the answers that you want!
