Songs of The North Sea is a singing workshop created and led by Sinéad Livingston and Penny Kempson, celebrating the heritage of the North East Coast, and beyond, via folk song.

Workshops are suitable for people from the age of 7 upwards, but those under 18 must be accompanied by an appropriate adult.

We take participants on a voyage of musical discovery, telling the story of North Eastern people, culture and heritage; from the moody, picturesque beaches of Northumberland, to the ship builders of Sunderland, and places in between.

Starting with a vocal warm up, and a few rounds, we explore simple, yet effective harmonies, with tunes that will be whirling around your mind for days after. There’s even an opportunity for a spot of group songwriting! This workshop is about discovery, rather than performance. The songs are designed to be easily learned and remembered, but the aim of the workshop isn’t to get to performance standards, but instead to meet likeminded people and learn a bit more about our region and its people and stories, while singing our hearts out.

Tea, coffee and snacks will be available from the cafe. Please bring cash if you would like to make use of the cafe fascilities.

The day will run from 12.30pm until 5pm with a break of 45 minutes to an hour for lunch/snacks. There'll also be a few 5 minute comfort breaks too if we need.
