Sunderland Empire

Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open.

Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Oswald Stoll, the Sunderland Empire theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.

The North East's flagship theatre, staging season after season of record-breaking smash hit productions, from top West End musicals to opera and ballet, cutting edge comedy and music gigs to family shows.

Sunderland Minster

The formerly ‘St Michael and All Angels Bishopwearmouth’ or ‘Bishopwearmouth Parish Church’ was first built around 900AD but due to many alterations little remains of the earlier constructions.

The Minster aims to be supportive of ecumenical, industrial, university and other educational and leisure activities. It provides a meeting place for people from all over the city as well as a centre of worship daily. The church was once again renamed on Tuesday May 1st, 2007, as the Minster Church of St Michael & All Angels and St Benedict Biscop, to commemorate its new status as an extra parochial place of worship.

The building is regularly used as part of city-wide music festivals, one-off concerts, and regional awards ceremonies.
